Readers / Circulation Services

Readers / Circulation Services enable eligible MCA Library users to borrow, return and use Library materials in accordance with the College's Library rules and borrowing procedures.

The service supports students, academic staff and other authorised users in accessing Library collections for teaching, learning, academic study and research.

What Are Circulation Services?

Circulation Services manage the movement and use of Library materials between the Library collection and its users. This includes borrowing, returning and managing materials issued to authorised Library users.

The service also supports users with questions about loans, returns, renewals, reservations and other matters relating to the use of circulating Library materials.

Services Available to Readers

Borrowing

Eligible Library users may borrow circulating Library materials according to their user category and the applicable borrowing rules.

Returns

Return borrowed materials to the Library by the due date and through the designated return arrangements.

Renewals

Where permitted, eligible users may renew borrowed materials subject to the applicable Library rules and the status of the item.

Reservations and Holds

Users may request materials that are currently on loan where the Library's circulation system provides this facility and the applicable conditions are met.

Short-Loan Materials

Certain high-demand or reserve materials may be subject to shorter borrowing periods and special conditions of use.

Loan Assistance

Library staff can assist users with questions about borrowing records, due dates, returns and other circulation matters.

Who Can Borrow?

Borrowing privileges are available to eligible MCA Library users in accordance with the College's Library membership and circulation provisions.

Loan limits and borrowing periods may differ according to the user's category and the type of Library material.

Users should check their individual borrowing conditions or contact Library staff when they are uncertain about their borrowing entitlement.

Borrowing Library Materials

Before borrowing an item, users should check that the material is suitable for circulation and confirm the applicable due date.

  • Borrow materials using your authorised Library account or through the Library's prescribed circulation procedure.
  • Check the due date before leaving the Library with borrowed materials.
  • Keep borrowed materials in good condition.
  • Return materials by the prescribed due date.
  • Do not lend Library materials borrowed in your name to another person.
  • Report lost or damaged materials to Library staff promptly.

Returning Materials

Borrowed Library materials should be returned by the prescribed due date.

Users remain responsible for materials issued to their Library account until they have been properly returned and recorded by the Library.

Important: Do not leave valuable or time-sensitive Library materials in an unattended location. Use the designated Library return arrangements or hand materials to Library staff where required.

Renewals

A Library item may be renewable where the applicable circulation rules permit renewal.

Renewal may not be possible where an item has been reserved, has exceeded the permitted renewal conditions or is otherwise subject to a restriction.

Users should check the current due date on their Library account and renew eligible materials before they become overdue.

Reservations and Holds

Where the catalogue and circulation system provides the hold facility, eligible users may place a request for an item that is currently unavailable.

Users should monitor their Library account for information about requested materials and comply with any collection instructions provided by the Library.

Short-Loan and Reserve Materials

Some Library materials are designated for short-term or controlled use because of demand, collection type or the need to ensure equitable access.

These materials may have different loan periods and conditions from ordinary circulating materials.

Users should follow the instructions provided by Library staff and the specific conditions attached to the material.

Overdue Materials

Library materials should be returned on or before the prescribed due date.

Where a material is overdue, the user's Library privileges may be affected in accordance with the applicable Library rules.

Users should contact the Library promptly when they are unable to return material by the due date.

Lost or Damaged Library Materials

Users are responsible for Library materials borrowed in their name and must report loss or damage to Library staff.

Where a Library item is lost or damaged, the user may be required to replace the item or meet the applicable financial obligation in accordance with the College's Library rules.

Library penalty: Where the applicable Library rule requires payment for a lost book, the fine is not less than MWK 50,000.00 or 50% of the current replacement cost, whichever is higher.

Library Account

Your Library account provides access to information about materials associated with your account, including items on loan and other available account functions.

Users should regularly check their Library account and report discrepancies to Library staff.

Log in to My Library

End-of-Semester Clearance

Students are required to return Library materials and complete the applicable Library clearance requirements at the end of the semester.

Users should resolve outstanding Library obligations before completing the College clearance process.

Readers' Responsibilities

  • Keep Library membership and account information accurate.
  • Protect Library materials from loss or damage.
  • Return borrowed materials on time.
  • Observe borrowing and use conditions for different types of Library materials.
  • Respect other Library users and Library staff.
  • Report lost, damaged or incorrectly recorded materials promptly.
  • Comply with applicable Library policies and College regulations.
